Our award-winning, open-source library of trusted, high-quality visual content and resources empowers anyone, anywhere, to create impactful stories.
We have world-leading filmmaking expertise, cutting-edge technology and a proven model for impact that saves time, money and carbon for storytellers everywhere. But we urgently need funding to scale our impact.
Why there is an urgent need for Open Planet
- Powerful storytelling has never been more important than in this critical decade to address the climate and nature crisis.
- Action to restore our planet is too slow, political will is falling short, and mis- and disinformation threaten meaningful progress.
- Our world is built on stories. They have the power to shift the way people think, feel and act.
- Storytellers around the world face critical barriers, with credible and compelling content often rights-restricted and expensive to use.
Launched in 2023, Open Planet was created to solve these challenges, by unlocking powerful stories that would otherwise go untold.
Together with our unique network of partners, we’re equipping educators, communicators and changemakers globally to tell factual, inspiring stories of our changing planet – the major problems and game-changing solutions.
Empowered with our content, storytellers are reaching hundreds of millions of people – from leaders in business and politics, to communities on the frontlines of change.
How we operate
Open Planet is an independent community interest company (also known as a social enterprise) and is an identified beneficiary of Friends of Open Planet which has 501(c)3 status. Our small core team supports a global network of partners and contributors committed to driving positive change for our planet. As a member of the UN SDG Media Compact, we are committed to catalysing meaningful action towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Funding directly supports our mission, by powering the Open Planet library and equipping storytellers to confidently communicate about our changing world.

Open Planet is free to use – and we want to keep it that way.
