Synopsis
The Jama Masjid of Delhi is one of the largest mosques in India. It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656 and served as the imperial mosque of the Mughal emperors until the empire's demise in 1857. The mosque remains in active use and is an iconic site in Delhi associated with the city's history. The mosque is made of red sandstone and white marble and features three domes and two minarets. The square sahn (courtyard) can accommodate 25,000 worshippers.'Eid' means 'feast' or 'festival' and is celebrated twice a year by Muslims. The dates of these festivals change each year according to the 12-month lunar calendar, which is around 11 days shorter than the solar calendar. Muslims attend special prayers at their local mosque and celebrate with family and friends during both Eids, with Eid al-Adha coming a little over two months after Eid al-Fitr.
