Synopsis

Every year, at Pattan Kodoli in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district, the village turns yellow with clouds of turmeric for four days. Such is the festival of Vittal Birdev Yatra, which marks the birth anniversary of the community’s deity, Vittal Birdev Maharaj, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The tradition includes throwing Haldi, a type of turmeric powder, over a Baba sitting under a banyan tree to celebrate the occasion.
