Synopsis

The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a narrow-gauge railway that runs between the towns of Kalka and Shimla, which is located in the foothills of the Himalayas in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The railway was built by the British in 1903 to connect Shimla, the summer capital of British India, with the rest of the Indian rail system. The railway, which traverses a mostly mountainous route, is known for its scenic beauty and engineering marvels and in 2008 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
