Synopsis
The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is a large apex predator that belongs to the requiem sharks family. It is the only member of the genus Galeocerdo that still exists. Tiger sharks have dark stripes on the sides of their bodies and fins, and females can grow up to 5 meters (16 ft) in length. They inhabit various tropical and temperate waters around the world and play a crucial role in oceanic ecosystems as top predators. By feeding on weak, injured, or infected individuals, they help control their prey populations. Additionally, their top-down force in the food chain helps balance the entire ecosystem and maintain its health. However, they are considered a near threatened species due to excessive finning and fishing.“Tiger Zoo” is a dive site discovered off the island of Fuvahmulah in the Maldives in 2017. Tiger sharks can be observed here in their dozens all year long, from shallow to deep waters. They are not aggressive and diving among them is deemed to be safe.
