Synopsis

The demoiselle crane (Grus virgo) is a species of crane found in central Eurosiberia. Demoiselle cranes are migratory birds. Birds from western Eurasia will spend the winter in Africa while the birds from Asia, Mongolia and China will spend the winter in the Indian subcontinent. Demoiselle cranes are symbolically significant in the culture of India, where it is known as Koonj or Kurjaa.Khichan is a village in Rajasthan. It is located in the Phalodi tehsil of Jodhpur district. It was one of the main jagir of Akherajot Rajpurohits during the Rathore dynesty. The village is known for a large number of demoiselle cranes that visit it every winter. This annual bird migration began with around a hundred cranes in the 1970s, when a local couple started feeding pigeons.
