Synopsis

Atlantic Grey Seals (Halichoerus grypus) are the larger of the two seal species that can be found in the UK (the other being the Common Seal). Reaching a length of 2.6 metres, these mammals spend around two thirds of their time out at sea feeding on fish such as sand eels and cod, but will return to land to rest and can often be seen ‘hauled out’ on the shores. Grey seals are gregarious at these haul-outs, sometimes forming large groups of several hundred animals. Their average lifespan is 30-40 years. While their distribution spreads beyond the UK, over 40% of the global population are found in Britain. Their numbers dropped to only 500 in the early 20th century, but it is now estimated that there are over 120,000 Grey Seals in the UK, representing 95% of the European population.
