Synopsis
The Nilgiri tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) is an ungulate that is endemic to the high grasslands of the Nilgiri Hills and the southern portion of the Western and Eastern Ghats in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in southern India. It is the state animal of Tamil Nadu.Threatened by habitat loss due to human activities such as deforestation, mining, and construction, Nilgiri tahr can often be seen along the road, amidst heavy traffic, in a narrow and fragmented stretch of 400 km between the Nilgiri Hills and Kanyakumari.
