Synopsis
Khajuraho is a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, known for its medieval Hindu and Jain temples which are famous for their Nagara-style architecture and some erotic sculptures. Most were built between 885 CE and 1000 CE by the Chandela dynasty. The temple complex had 85 temples by the 12th century, but only about 25 have survived. The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is decorated with intricate sculptures that showcase ancient Indian art. This popular tourist destination has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 and is considered one of the seven wonders of India.Various statues and panels have inscriptions. Many of the inscriptions on the temple walls are poems with double meanings, something that the complex structure of Sanskrit (the predominant language of Hindu texts) allows in creative compositions.
