Synopsis

Tube worms are invertebrates that anchor their tails to an underwater surface. They secrete a mineral tube around their body (sometimes strengthened by mud or sand) into which they can withdraw their entire body. Tube worms in the family Sebellidae, also known as feather duster worms, are characterised by protruding feathery respiratory organs called branchiae. The worm extends the tentacles for feeding and breathing but quickly retracts them at the first sign of danger. The life cycle includes a free-living, microscopic larval stage that disperses from the parental site and metamorphoses into adult form.
