Synopsis

In the northern Himalayas of India, snow leopards play a crucial role as keystone species, serving as indicators of the environment's health. However, when the natural prey becomes scarce, they may resort to preying on livestock, often leading to retaliatory killings by local communities who heavily depend on their cattle for their livelihoods. To address this issue and foster coexistence, the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) has been collaborating with Himalayan communities for years. NCF's initiatives include the installation of predator-proof corrals and the implementation of livestock insurance schemes, resulting in a decrease in livestock losses while providing compensation for any losses incurred. Furthermore, NCF has taken a pioneering step by establishing the first all-women group of snow leopard monitors, rapidly equipping them with skills and fostering teamwork. This groundbreaking effort not only proves instrumental in conservation but also serves as an inspirational model for women globally. By empowering women to become leaders in this effort, the project benefits both the local community and the vital cause of snow leopard conservation.
