Synopsis

The formal infrastructure for effective water distribution in Kibera is very poor and often non-existent. This has resulted in Kibera residents creating improvised water pipes that run into the city of Nairobi, as a way of accessing clean and safe water. Thousands of small rubber tubes are linked up to a formal water supply and are woven throughout the neighbourhood, transporting water to taps in the community. A major issue is the quality of the water by the time it reaches the tap. The rubber pipes run along the ground, passing through piles of waste and open sewers. This can pollute the water and result in a high risk of disease. At the time of this footage being captured in 2023, the infrastructure was not in place to supply safe drinking water to all residents of Kibera, though work is being done to replace these pipes with safe, legal water kiosks in the future.
