Global Seed Vault in Svalbard

Synopsis

The Global Seed Vault, located in Svalbard, Norway, is a secure storage facility designed to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds from around the world. Sometimes referred to as the "Doomsday” vault, its purpose is to safeguard the seeds of essential food crops, thereby protecting global biodiversity. The vault is carved into a mountainside in the Arctic Svalbard archipelago, offering natural protection and ideal storage conditions. The seeds stored here can be used in the event of a global crisis or to replenish other seed banks lost to disaster.
