Synopsis

Sand eels are small eel-like fish which can often be found in vast shoals close to the seabed, feeding off plankton. They will burrow into the sand to escape predators. Sand eels are long and have a pointed snout - giving them an eel-like shape. Sand eels are a favourite food source for puffins, harbour porpoises, terns, pollack and mackerel.
