Synopsis
African lions (Panthera leo leo) are big cats found in sub-Saharan Africa, where their habitat consists of savannas, grasslands, and open woodland. Their numbers have been declining, which is due to a variety of threats they face, such as habitat loss, natural prey decline, human conflict, and poaching. As of 2023, they are listed as 'Vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
