Synopsis
Billions of sardines, or more precisely, the Southern African pilchard Sardinops sagax, spawn in the chilly waters of the Agulhas Bank from May through July, and then migrate northward along the east coast of South Africa. This movement is known as the KwaZulu-Natal sardine run.
