Synopsis
Often confused with the larger but similarly shaped lion’s mane jellyfish, the blue jellyfish (Cyanea lamarckii) can be colourless when young, and can vary from pale yellow to purple, but develops a striking blue-purple bell as it matures. They can be seen around the UK coastline in summer and autumn when blooms of plankton are in plentiful supply.
