Synopsis

Snakelocks anemones (Anemonia viridis) live attached to rocks in the sunniest pools on the low shore and in shallow seas. They have squat brown bodies and green, snake-like tentacles that give them their name. The tentacles are home to a kind of algae which produces energy from the sun, so they will position themselves in spots that make the most of sunlight, and their sting is used to catch prey. They are found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.Leach's spider crab (Inachus phalangium) is a small crab with long, slender legs and sturdy claws. They can be found on the coasts of the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea and live commensally with snakelocks anemones by eating particles of food dropped by them.
