Synopsis

Maerl is a purple-pink hard seaweed that forms spiky underwater 'carpets' on the seabed, known as 'maerl beds'.Maerl beds form when calcareous red algae grow into loose nodules or occasional crusts, creating dense yet porous beds of coralline algae.
