Synopsis

The Sand mason worm (Lanice conchilega) is a species of burrowing marine polychaete worm. It builds a characteristic protective tube to live in, which projects from the seabed, consisting of cemented sand grains and shell fragments. This structure is used for catching food and looks like a mini sand tree. They are found in the northern hemisphere in many parts of the world, including all UK coasts, and can be alone or in dense beds of thousands of individuals. The megrim, megrim sole, whiff, or Cornish sole is a species of left-eyed flatfish found in the northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. Found over a sandy or muddy sea floor, they are predators and eat small fish, squid and crustaceans. Megrim is commercially valuable and is usually caught by bottom trawling.Swanpool in Cornwall is a small coastal saline lagoon with a shingle bar, separating it from the beach of the same name.
