Synopsis
The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is the largest mammal on the planet, growing up to 30 metres in length. Blue whales can be found in all major oceans on the planet. It is classified as endangered (2023). Human practices such as commercial whaling were a major threat to this species, but since the ban of whaling in the 1990s, their greatest threat today is ship strikes and entanglement with fishing equipment.
