Synopsis
Evictions and subsequent protests took place in Khayelitsha, Cape Town in 2020, when a community seeking refuge from frequent flooding in a nearby settlement was removed. The protests were sparked by residents demanding basic services in the newly formed shack suburbs. These settlements arose during the Covid-19 lockdown, when job losses led to overcrowded living conditions. The City of Cape Town deemed these occupations as illegal, either because the land was earmarked for other purposes or was deemed unfit for habitation. This incident prompted court action that restricted the City of Cape Town's ability to evict people without a court order.
