Synopsis
Dandora dumpsite, just outside the capital Nairobi, opened in 1975 and covers over 30 acres of land. It is where much of the waste collected in Nairobi ends up and is estimated to contain over 850 million tonnes of solid waste.Every minute, waste pickers at the site offload waste from various arriving trucks. These waste pickers, who are also residents from different parts of the region, depend on the landfill as a source of income by recycling materials such as plastic, glass bottles, and metal products. However, burning waste at the site leads to emissions that affect most residents living in the area.
