Global populations of sharks and rays have declined by 71% since 1970, primarily due to overfishing, notably for human consumption. Due to their slow growth, late sexual maturation and long lifespan, sharks and rays are highly vulnerable to fishing pressure.Some species of sharks and rays are protected in Malaysia; the species featured were not under this protection at the point of filming.
