Synopsis

Sabah has seen severe degradation of their forest due to heavy pressures to convert the land into palm oil plantations, the main export of Sabah. In 2018, the Sabah Forest Policy pledged to allocate at least 30% of Sabah’s land area to Totally Protected Areas by 2025. This logging site is situated within the Deramakot Forestry reserve, which holds the status as the world's first and longest-standing tropical rainforest to be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Certified forests must be environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous.
