Jabiru and Ringed Kingfisher

Synopsis

The Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) is a large stork found in the Americas, from Mexico to Argentina. It is the tallest flying bird in South and Central America and has a distinctive appearance with a large black head, a bare black neck, and a massive, slightly upturned black bill, contrasting with its white body. These birds typically inhabit wetlands, including Brazil's Pantanal region—the world's largest tropical wetland. Like other storks, Jabirus are wading birds that feed on various aquatic prey, including fish, amphibians, and reptiles. They serve as important indicators of wetland health and, although facing threats from habitat loss and degradation, are considered a species of least concern by the IUCN, an improvement from a status of near threatened in the 1980s.
