Synopsis
Noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) known also as European crayfish, or broad-fingered crayfish is native to Europe, uniquely indigenous to Norway and Sweden. It inhabits shallow waters, burrowing in steep banks. Nocturnal and omnivorous, it mates in autumn. Populations have declined dramatically. Listed as Critically Endangered in Sweden due to the invasive Signal crayfish, which unknowingly spread crayfish plague in the 1960s. Habitat loss from hydropower dams also threatens them.
