Synopsis
European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus), also called European souslik, is a rodent species in the Sciuridae family. Native to eastern and central Europe, it lives in colonies in pastures or grassy areas. These diurnal squirrels emerge during daylight to feed on seeds, plants, and small invertebrates. Their colonies use sentinel squirrels that whistle to warn of predators, prompting others to retreat to safety.
