Synopsis
The Unequal Scenes project documents the stark contrasts in Panama City, a major financial centre where modern skyscrapers stand next to slums. The city's outsized influence stems from its strategic location, the Panama Canal, and its dollar-based economy.Average Panamanians live in the outskirts of the city, with the poorest in rural areas. Notable slums like Boca La Casa exist directly alongside the wealthy financial district.Cerro Patacón, the main garbage dump of Panama City, frequently catches fire and sends harmful smoke into the downtown area. Many poor people make a living by collecting and selling items from this dump, with hundreds living right beside it.
