Synopsis

Deforestation driven by activities such as agriculture and cattle-ranching can lead to higher temperatures and less rainfall, which dries out tropical forests and increases fire risk.With the extreme drought driven by the strong El Niño of 2023, forest fires broke records in the Amazon.The El Niño event is a climate pattern where warmer equatorial Pacific Ocean temperatures disrupt Amazon rainfall. These combined factors created drier conditions that worsened forest fires.
