Synopsis

Footage from the Unequal Scenes project documents stark divisions through aerial photography.Colombia faces deep-rooted inequality stemming from historical factors, armed conflicts, and migration patterns. The geography of Bogotá, while beautiful, presents challenges for urban development. However, the country has implemented innovative civic solutions, such as car-free Sundays and cable car systems, to improve life quality.Despite these initiatives, social and economic challenges persist, with recent trends showing worsening inequality. The government uses a "social strata" system (levels 1-6) to provide differential pricing for utilities based on household wealth. This system is visible in Bogotá's urban layout, with wealthy neighbourhoods (strata 5-6) in the north and poorer areas in the south, most notably exemplified by the contrasting development patterns around the Suba hills.
