Synopsis
Bali, known as the "Island of the Gods," faces significant challenges despite its paradise-like appeal. While celebrated for its landscapes and culture, the island struggles with inequality, cultural erosion, and environmental issues due to mass tourism and development.Tourism development focuses mainly in urban and coastal areas, creating a stark divide. Cities like Denpasar, Kuta, and Ubud feature modern amenities, while rural areas remain underdeveloped. This has displaced local communities and deepened poverty among indigenous populations.Bali's water comes from crater lakes, rivers, and groundwater, managed through the UNESCO-recognised "subak" irrigation system. This traditional system reflects the Balinese Hindu philosophy of harmony between people, nature, and spirit. However, the current tourism volume exceeds the island's sustainable water capacity.
